GOKU Lore /Information:

“No, see, I don’t think like I’m saving the world. The fact is, it’s cause I’m usually trying to challenge the strongest warriors I can find. That’s how this tournament happened, too. But I can’t bear the thought of innocent lives getting wiped out just cause I wanna fight the best. So, I’ll do what I can for them.”
— Goku to Android 17 in “Hunt the Poaching Ring! Goku and Android 17’s Joint Struggle!”

Son Goku has worn a total of four symbols on his dogi throughout his lifetime.

The first symbol Goku wears is 亀/Kame, which is the kanji for “turtle”. Goku began wearing this emblem when he and Kuririn completed their training under the Turtle Sage — called Kame Sen’nin in Japanese. The kame kanji is probably the most well-known and iconic symbol in Dragon Ball, and it’s also the longest lived. Goku wears it throughout the entirety of the first Dragon Ball anime starting from the 21st Tenka’ichi Budokai and during the Saiyan arc of DBZ. Goku briefly returns to wearing it during the 2008 special, Heya! Son Goku and Friends Return!!.

The second symbol is also the shortest lived. In truth, it’s actually a combination of two kanji, 界/Kai, which means “World” and 王/Oh, which means “King”, squished together vertically, and it is the personal emblem of Kaio, aka the King of Worlds. Kaio added it to the back of Goku’s new dogi right before he was resurrected to fight the Saiyans, though the kame kanji remained on the front. Goku continued to wear this uniform during his gravity training in space, before switching to a new dogi right before arriving on Namek.

The third symbol that Goku wears is 悟/Go, taken from the first character in Goku’s given name. He wears this throughout the rest of the Freeza arc until that uniform is destroyed. For the rest of the manga and the DBZ anime, Goku doesn’t wear any symbol on his dogi, though the Go kanji does make a reappearance starting in Battle of Gods, and throughout most of Dragon Ball Super.

Unlike the others, the final symbol Goku has worn is not a kanji at all. It is Whis’s personal signature, and it was actually added by Whis during a sparring session in order to show off his speed. Goku and Vegeta wear it on their new clothes starting in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ and they continue to wear it throughout the Universe 6 Tournament arc of Dragon Ball Super.
